You know when you change your hair enough for people to notice? Maybe you cut it or dye it, or both. Well I did that a while ago, I dyed it blond, and people responded with “Ohhh you changed your hair!” And then it would follow with “It looks good!” I always wondered though if they actually meant it. Because you can’t help but notice and say something when someone changes their hair, but if you just leave it at that, it’s sort of rude. “Oh you cut your hair!” and then what? Silence? “Cool?” I suppose you could quickly avoid having to make a comment about it by asking something like “What made you decide to change it?” But that usually occurs to me after I’ve already said I like it.
What I’m getting at is that the other day, I ran into someone that had dramatically cut their hair and I was like “Wow! You cut your hair.” The wow meant more “that is a shocking change” than “you look fabulous.” I didn’t want to seem too shocked though so I followed it with a supportive “I like it.” But I actually didn’t like it. I mean I get why she cut it – lots of split ends etc etc, it made sense. But her hair was so cute before so I can’t help but miss it. Am I crazy or is it sort of hard not to say “I like it” after you notice someone’s changed their look, even if you don’t?
“Oh your family got matching hair cuts!”
“I, er, like it?”
