thunderstorm

So earrrrrly this morning I was deep in sleep mode dreaming of God only knows what – “I’ll take one of everything Anthropologie!” – and woke up, no, no, jolted awake to a sonic BOOM, soon followed by several car alarms going off then a bright white flash. I turned to Randy in panic asking, “WHAT was that?” We waited a bit longer then another boom happened followed by another bright flash. Then a trickling noise. That’s when I came to a realization. You know you’ve lived on the west coast too long when you mistake a thunderstorm for a terrorist attack. The only other time I’ve thought something like that was our first year here when I didn’t know the Blue Angels were doing practice runs over our apartment for Fleet Week. OK i know you think i’m crazy but if you’ve lived out west for some time you know that 1) We don’t get rain in September and 2) We never get thunderstorms. We’ll get that occasional weenie thunder with a little flash of heat lightning sometimes, but never that earth rattling crack of thunder that scares the bejeezus out of you. Even poor Jack was scared and trembling in the bed. I did have some reason to be alarmed though. Evidently a transformer or 2 was struck causing power outages and freaked out residents. One resident left a comment on theSFist that says it best:

I live on Grove between Octavia and Laguna and the BOOM shook the f-ing house. I haven’t ever been jolted out of bed like that before…It sounded like a car bomb going off. The block behind me smells of charred sh-t. Otherwise there isn’t a trace that anything happened except for my soiled bedding.
