Kentucky

Okay. I have to put it out there. It’s the new year so I’m being more honest – and blunt I suppose.

I HATE Vera Bradley. Like hate hate. There, I said it. I’ve never understood why people like her stuff. The moment I saw it I thought “diaper bag.” I do not get it. Since I never see them in SF, I had actually forgotten my hatred for them until I stepped in this store in Kentucky and saw this:

It was like kudzu, but instead green vines, it was pink and purple paisley covering everything in the store. Ahhhh! I’ll be having nightmares about quilted laptop cases and floral messenger bags tonight.

Okay okay, so all we do when we visit Kentucky is eat and visit giant ball players I guess. On our way to the airport, Randy’s dad surprised us with a bucket full of candy from Ruth Hunt, the official candy maker of the Kentucky Derby. This stuff has to be my favorite candy ever. Possibly the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten. I’m not exaggerating people! It’s amazing!

Ruth Hunt makes all kinds of candy, but is best known for its cream candy and Blue Moon bars which are cream candy covered in dark chocolate. It’s so light and delicious and melts in your mouth that I’ve already eaten like 5 of them today. I’ll admit though, if you don’t have a severe sweet tooth like I do, you probably will be overwhelmed (with deliciousness!) Devour at your own risk.

So we went out last night for a late-night snack at this college joint in downtown Lexington. We sit at a table that happens to be right beside a crew of several very tall young men. My husband, a big UK basketball fan, leans over to me and says “That’s P-Pat.” And of course I say, “A P-what?” He explains to me that P-Pat (Patrick Patterson) is a really good basketball player who plays for UK.  Then he somehow convinces me to get my picture taken with him. This is where things get a little fuzzy for me. I mean it was pretty late and I may have partaken in a few alcoholic beverages earlier. So lil ole me goes over to him and says “P-Pat, can I get a picture with you?” And this is how it turned out. Randy is sitting down at the table looking up at us – hence my triple chin. But check out the ridiculously excited expression on my face:

Oh but it’s not over yet. My husband then tells me, “Hey that’s Wall over there.” He gestures across the room pointing at a crowd. “See if you can get a picture with him too.” So of course once again I’m like “Wall??” But this time I don’t even bother asking for an explanation. Instead, since I’m now best buds with P-Pat I tap him on his ginormous arm and go “Hey, I’m supposed to get a picture with Wall too. Do you know which one is Wall?” He describes a guy sitting at a table with a star on his hat. I tell P-Pat that he has to come over with me to ask him. We’re buddies remember? Or I liked to think so at that moment. Instead with one gesture he motions for Wall to come over. Not sure who the third guy in the middle is. But we’re pretty sure he’s a basketball player too, since he’s giant. Here’s the pic, again with me looking like it’s Christmas morning and Santa is 3 giant black guys.

P-Pat, ? , Me, Wall

Later I found out Wall’s full name. It’s John Wall and he was this past year’s number one college basketball recruit in the country. He’s kind of a big deal yo.

John "I'm kind of a big deal" Wall

K: Yea, Wall is kinda of a HUGE deal. He took forever to commit to a school. Memphis?……Duke?……Kentucky? I saw him on Duke’s campus when he was there to talk to Coach K, people went nuts.

Action shot: wallowing in the grass

Happy to be outside

Jack more than loved playing in the giant backyard here in Kentucky. He ran and ran and wallowed in it as much as he could.

Up next: Jack’s first swim in the pool!

K: Look at that wittle face! And he looks like a dead cockroach in the first picture :)

A: Mmmm Chili

dixie

Anytime we fly into Cincinnati, at any hour, we make a point to go to Dixie Chili. Even when we don’t fly into there, we’ll sometimes drive the hour plus up there to go get it. You can only get it at 3 locations, all in Northern Kentucky.

The first time I visited Randy’s family in Kentucky, we ate there. It was almost like an initiation. If I didn’t like it, I might get voted out. Fortunately I did like it. A lot. I ordered a coney at first which is chili, cheese, mustard, and a hot dog in a bun. I quickly realized that you don’t really need the hot dog at all because the chili’s so good! So now I just order the chili cheese. They’re pretty small so I can sometimes eat up to 3. Randy has eaten like 6 or 7 before. Blegh.

People compare them to Goldstar Chili. It’s sort of like comparing McDonalds to In N Out. You’ll eat McDonalds because it’s good and convenient, but nowhere near as amazing and delicious as the In N Out that’s 50 miles away.

Anyway, our plane’s landed so we’re goin’ to get some Dixie yall!

Tomorrow I’m leaving – at 3:50 in the morning!! – to go visit the in-laws in Lexington, Kentucky. I’ll try to blog some while I’m away. I could blog on the plane if we were flying Virgin! But alas, we’re flying Delta – which means I probably won’t be leaving until noon.
