I wish my apartment looked like any of these. My favorites though I think are the first 2 pics. I can’t help it, I’m a sucker for red, brown and cream.

Christmas Fudge!

Disaster kitchen

I made my first batch of fudge ever. My mom and Randy’s mom used to make it every year, and each of us thinks that our mom’s recipe is the best. So naturally I didn’t make either one of ours. What? I’m not even going to try to compete. Instead I tried my own version. It’s based on this recipe but instead of 2 cups milk chocolate chips, 1 cup semisweet, I added 1 cup butterscotch chips, 1 cup milk, 1 cup semi. I have no idea how it’ll taste, but the leftovers in the bowl were pretty good I’d say. And the consistency I think looks good. It’s in the fridge right now solidifying. I’ll update this post later with taste test results!

UPDATE: Success! Randy claims to like it and I think it’s pretty good too. We’ll have to go public with it and see what others think.

I also made ranch oyster crackers, another Christmas tradition. There is absolutely no cooking involved. If you can pour ingredients into a bowl and stir, you can make them too.
Here’s the recipe.

This year I have been on top of my Christmas shopping. I even bought some stuff months in advance because if you see the perfect gift for someone early, why wait? It’s way more fun to give gifts you’re excited to give than some rando gift that you scrambled to buy at the mall the day before Christmas. (Don’t worry, I’ll have some of those too.) But this year I was stoked to go home and have Christmas and pass out my fun gifts…until I spoke with my mom.

It quickly went from “Yay Christmas time!!!” to “Bah, humbug.” Sadly this year not all my family can make it to our house, so I’ll have to mail them my gifts. It’s not as fun because I like to watch them open them, but oh well, it happens. Then my mom mentioned that she and my dad just haven’t had time to decorate and won’t be putting up the Christmas tree in the living room this year. We’ll have a little one in the den instead. The first time in my 29 years of life we won’t have our tree up. So sad. And lastly she said “I think your dad and I are just going to give you money.” This is fine, but just to be helpful I threw a out a couple present ideas like a DVD (Eclipse yay!) which was met with “Well you probably just want money so…” No! I told you, DVD! I’m giving you ideas here! Money isn’t any fun. Santa doesn’t stop at the ATM before making his rounds! I half expected the next thing out of her mouth to be, “and you can bake your own damn cookies because we’re not feelin that this year either.” Fortunately that wasn’t said. So fingers crossed the baking is still on.

So I guess not every Christmas can be a winner, but it’s kinda crappy growing up and your parents deciding “Enh, we’ve had enough,” and put up a Christmas shrub and call it a holiday.”

Sniff. I’m going to go listen to Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas album and reminisce about the good ole days.

I was walking through our neighborhood this evening and noticed a few new boutiques that have popped up, as well as some that have changed their decor. I love discovering new little boutiques All teeny and pretty. But I don’t like being the only one in there and being watched while I look around. Even worse are those store people that literally follow you around the store trying to help. And since it’s so teeny you feel obligated to talk. But oh well, I do it anyway because I still love all the little new crafty things I find.

My new favorite store (which actually has been around for a while – I just haven’t been in during the holidays) is Terra Sol. They go hog wild every holiday and redesign the entire store with all holiday things. I literally wanted to buy every glitter-covered ornament and doodad in there. And inside smelled so good! Like a gingerbread house mixed with evergreens. Here’s a little video of the store. So cute!

Lots of people dread birthdays. Maybe it’s the thought of getting older. I don’t know. But I love birthdays. And tomorrow just happens to be my 24th birthday…or as I like to affectionately refer to it as my “birfday.” In honor of my day of birth I’d like to share with you a little video I made of my future puppy. Yes, I said it. PUPPY! We’re getting a puppy. Jeffers surprised me over Christmas. Squeeeeeeeee! We’re being very responsible and going through a wonderful breeder who has educated us a lot on becoming new doggy parents. I’m reading up on all of my puppy manuals and preparing for the little fluffy addition to our family. The next step is to puppy proof this apartment, whew! But, without further ado….

Meet Willie, (who may or may not be named after Willie Nelson).

I think I’m in love :)

So my sister and I are really into rain boots, remember? Well lets just say that this Christmas, puddles everywhere gained a new enemy. Both my sister and I have a love for Hunter rain boots, but could never bring ourselves to pay that much money for boots. So, naturally, we put them on our Christmas lists hoping that somebody else would be willing to pay that much money for boots. So, Christmas rolls around and patiently we wait. And then Anna spots it. A large, rectangular box that could potentially house her precious boots. Could it be?

Yes! Victory! Her shiny silver astronaut rain boots! But what about me? I sat patiently as the pile of presents was rummaged through and then, wait could it be? A very similar sized rectangular box. I started getting excited as my dad picked it up. I prepared to accept my present when suddenly he hands it to Anna. Wait what?! Confusion sets in. What was in this box? Obviously not Hunter Boots. Anna already had her pair. And then, it happened….

Whaaaaaaaaaat?

I immediately regressed back to my 6 year old self as the jealousy of my older sister set in. Of course Anna gets 2 pairs of boots, she’s the oldest and blah, blah, blah. Hmph! However, after returning to my grown up self, I quickly realized that there had been a mix up. Apparently “Santa” and my brother in law hadn’t had a conversation before Christmas that would have helped them realize that they had bought a certain Anna the same gift. Oops? Well, it certainly made for lots of laughs and a bit of confusion. But the best part? There was a happy ending after all!

Hooray!

Merry Christmas!
