Back to the Future celebrates its 25th anniversary – and we still don’t have flying cars

Other titles considered for this post were:
Highway(s) to Hell
Sweatin’ to the Everything
Too Hot for the Hot Tub
I be heat strokin’
Dear God, am I on Fire?
No really, do you smell that? I think my skin is smoking.
So my husband and I went back east for our anniversary. We started in North Carolina, drove to D.C. and then flew to Montreal and Quebec City. (More on that fun travel experience later.) This portion of “How I spent my summer vacation” is devoted to the level of heat we endured on our travels.
It started out fine actually. July 4 in NC was unusually not humid and a balmy 80ish degrees. And that was as cool as it ever got the rest of the trip. We made our way to Williamsburg Va. and then to D.C. where temperatures soared to 106 degrees. This isn’t “eat some ice cream and cool off in the shade” kinda hot. This is get me to the closest water fountain or I’m going to drink that dog’s water bowl STAT. Why people live here (and wear SUITS) is beyond me. When it’s not hot as a June bride in a feather bed (sorry I think I was channeling Steel Magnolias) – when it’s not hot as balls out, it’s Snowmageddon. Props to those of you brave enough to live in the DC area. I don’t know how you do it. Oh wait, yes I do, you wear this!
Yes, that is one patriotic Speedo.
So anyway, I gave up on trying to look remotely nice the rest of the trip. Your makeup melts off the minute you step outside and the sweat stains on your butt are completely unflattering yet unavoidable. I just gave up and succumbed to my sweaty state. So with water bottles in tow, ponytail up, sweat stains on, we ventured out into the fire-pit that is Washington D.C. Even Jacky Bear had to endure it. Every photo we have of him he’s got his tongue hanging out and looking for water. This is the dog who HATES getting in the water. But man he loved laying in those fountains when he got the chance. Such a cutie.
As for the rest of the trip, even Canada! was in the 90s. So we never did quite escape it.

Randy and I are headed to Montreal and Quebec City this week for our 2nd anniversary! We’ve never been so anyone who has recommendations for us, we’re listening! Our French is a little (a lot) rusty, but we plan to use a lot of pointing and gesturing.
Last year we were in Vancouver, “the Couve” for our first anniversary. I think we have some sort of Canadian fetish.

So a few days ago I posted about my anniversary trip to Vancouver, “the couve.” I highly recommend visiting if you ever get a chance. If I had a visa I would even think of moving there! But anyway, one of my favorite things about this city was its shopping. Shocking for me I know. But seriously, there were some really great eclectic shops we discovered that sold a lot of things made by local Canadian designers. One of my favorite stores was Militant Penguin. Not only is the name awesome, but the cute and funky tshirts and jewelry they sold inside were awesome too. My husband and I each ended up buying a shirt there. His had the Militant Penguin logo on it with the penguin holding a big AK47 and mine had a black tree with bicycles hanging from it.

Another one of my favorite stores that Randy pretty much had to pull me out of was The Regional Assembly of Text. They had all of my favorite things. Antique typewriters everywhere, decorative paper and cards, stationary, handmade books, journals, stamps – any of these would make the cutest gifts for someone! Plus there was this little teeny room called The Lowercase Gallery you could go into that had all of these handmade books and zines that were so pretty to look through. I wanted to buy everything, but ended up leaving with 10 handmade postcards.

The last of my favorite stores was called F as in Frank. It was a store unlike anything I’d ever seen. I feel like we should have something like it in the Mission here in SF but I have yet to discover one. It was all 80′s clothes and accessories in great condition. On first glance you’d think it was just some hip boutique store. They also had these re-purposed 80s t-shirts that they made into knit dresses. I tried one on and it was super cute but made me feel a little too much like Punky Brewster. I decided I’m officially too old to pull off that much funk. They had a ton of neon sunglasses and boomboxes around. Randy loved all of the old sports jerseys and team jackets. My all time favorite thing about this store wasn’t anything they sold though, it was their door. It was amazing! It was all made of silverware that had been welded together to form a gate out of spoons and knives, then spray painted a dull silver color. Now THAT’S creative.

If you happen to make it to Vancouver try to visit Main Street where most of these shops are. It’ll be a nice break from your Twilight stalking

So in keeping with the matrimonial theme today, I thought I’d share a few pics from our first year anniversary trip to Vancouver we took a few weeks ago. We’d never been before and always wanted to visit so we took a long weekend and flew up there to celebrate 365 days of marriage. Of course Jack came too. He came with us on our honeymoon, why wouldn’t he celebrate 1 year with us too? Vancouver is an amazing city. Not as Canadian as I had hoped, only a few “eh’s” were heard and an “aboot,” but still cool. We walked all over the city since it’s not very big and had our official anniversary dinner at Rodney’s in Yaletown one night. This place is significant b/c 1. It is the best seafood place in Vancouver and 2. RPattz ate there! No, not when we were there, but when they were filming New Moon. If only we’d gone just a couple months earlier! Blasted anniversary date! I’m sure that’s exactly what my husband would’ve wanted to do for our anniversary, stalk Twilight characters. Yeah yeah. Here are some pics:
PS: I had always wondered why paper was chosen as the first anniversary gift, now i know. You’re poor as crap after the wedding and are still paying it off a year later. The only thing you can afford is paper. So my gift to the hubby was a vintage Vancouver postcard – I bought at this awesome paper shop called The Regional Assembly of Text – with a sweet message on the back. I’m sure there are more creative paper gifts to give, but I thought a postcard was appropriate given the circumstances. His gift to me, the trip
I definitely have more to post about Vancouver, but i’ll save that for another post. To be continued!
K: Jack’s face in that picture literally screams “WTF are you doing. Put me down.” He has a very Stewey-like look from “Family Guy.” And sigh, RPattz. I still lament not seeing him in NYC. But I figured there were too many set stalking crazies around him as it was, and I didn’t want to add to the mosh pit. I’m a married girl after all, I have to keep my priorities in line. But if, say for instance, he were to ever approach me and confess his undying love to me, I’d make like a spidermonkey, latch onto his back and fly to the nearest Chapel of Love. Well, me and probably every other 12 year old on the planet.
