My Name is Earl

On the road again! Err…actually, in the air again. Or at least trying to get in the air again. Remember a few months back where it seemed like every time I blogged about flying home it was always followed up with another post cursing mother nature and her shenangians? Well, dear readers, she strikes again. Jeff and I are heading south for Labor Day Weekend; that is if a little hurricane system named Earl doesn’t get in our way.

Honestly, I really think people up here are freaking out for no reason. I’m pretty sure this hurricane isn’t heading straight for the city, but people sure are acting like it. Several flights have already been canceled, and I’m crossing my fingers and toes that ours is not. So keep thinking good thoughts for us that our plane makes a safe trip down to NC hurricane free :)

Check out these old school pics of the NYC subway. Interestingly enough, there are some subway cars that still look like this….minus the MCHammer haircuts, and blinding sweater patterns. The saxophone players are still there though. And the graffiti. Ohhhh the graffiti.

Pretty sure I saw this guy the other day.

That’s what Jeff and I have been for the past few weeks, but I’m happy to say that we are all moved in to our new apartment now! After several hours of painting walls and one too many trips to IKEA, we can now be pretty proud of our little home :) It’s been nice making this place feel like us, and Willie seems to be pretty happy with his new digs too! Check out the finished product!

The kitchen that I already blogged about. Still kinda proud of it :)

One side of the living room. Jeffers picked out both paint colors, way to go! We still need something to go over the coach. Baby steps though.

Our hallway. Bookshelf and baskets all from IKEA.

Other side of the living room. We still shamelessly display our wedding pictures…everywhere. It’s a shrine. I swear we have friends.

This is what we like to call our “breakfast nook.” The fact that we can have a breakfast nook in the city makes us ridiculously happy. And there are more wedding pictures, sigh.

And finally the bedroom. No, it’s not very manly, poor Jeffy. But he seems to be OK with it. Maybe.

Still more to do, but we’re taking a break for now!!

Who you may ask? Martha Stewart of course. Jeff and Willie were watching TV over the weekend while I was barefoot and in the kitchen slaving over dinner (taking the delivery pizza out of the box) when I heard a PetSmart commercial come on. It’s sad that I know the familiar jingle that plays during that commercial, specifically because Willie gets so freaking excited when it comes on. Anyway, I returned to my tedious task of studying our medium sized pepperoni pizza and deciding which four slices were the biggest so I could give them to Jeff, leaving me with the smaller 4 pieces so I could reassure myself that I really didn’t eat half of the pizza, when I hear Jeff exclaim, “OH MY GOD.”

Thinking Willie had gotten stuck in the bathtub again, or under the TV console, or pooped somewhere, I came out of the kitchen ready to assist with the doggy problem only to find both of my guys still lounging on the couch: the furry one curled up on a pillow enjoying a pig ear (ew, see previous post), and the hubsters staring at the TV looking slightly annoyed. I turned my attention to the screen and that’s when I saw her. Martha, in all of her crafty-glory, delicately arranging plush looking doggy beds  on PetSmart shelves, and intricately hanging adorable patterned leash/collar sets along the aisles.  Martha Stewart Pets has officially launched.

I gazed over at my swine ear eating puppy, and Jeff reluctantly looked up at me knowing exactly what was going through my head. He’d seen that look on my face before. That look right before Martha somehow takes over another part of our lives. First, it was our wedding. Then, our kitchen. Our bedroom fell victim to her shortly there after. And now, poor Willie has no idea what he may be getting into.

Christmas has indeed come early for the little guy :)

Poor Willie. There’s just been so much going on in his little life recently that he’s having a very hard time adjusting. With moving to a new apartment and mommy’s new schedule, (ie I’m home for 2.5 seconds during the entire week), he’s starting to act out….which is totally understandable, poor little guy. So, luckily I was able to have most of the day off from work yesterday and I decided that it was time that the little man and I spent some good quality time together. We went on a nice long 2 hour walk where he met lots of fun doggy friends. He got to roll around in the green grass disgusting sidewalk concrete, and roll over and proudly display his junk to strangers as they walked by. What can I say, he certainly has zero modesty. But to cap the whole day off, I took him to his favorite pet treat store to pick him out some yummy and of course healthy goodies to enjoy that night.

Willie’s acting out gets especially bad during meal times. You see, Willie discovered yummy people food by accident when mommy had an unfortuante run-in with the kitchen table and dropped her dinner on the floor, much to the delight of one furry little guy. Christmas came early that night for Willie. There was no turning back then. Ugh. But, back to the pet store. I explained to the lady working there that I needed a mealtime snack that we could give Willie to keep him distracted long enough for us to enjoy our dinner in peace. Afterall, because of our insane schedules, Jeff and I eat about 3 meals a week together, so we’d like to enjoy them ya know? But we also certainly don’t want our little guy feeling like he’s being ignored, so there had to be a happy medium, right?

So the lady at the store was very much into the whole “organic process of letting your dog find the treat that best suits him instead of the owner forcing him to eat one that they buy” thing, and we set off parading Willie up and down each aisle letting him sniff and lick (gross?) the different treats. There were dozens of different treats. All different shapes, sizes, colors, and flavors. There were training treats, milk bones, Kongs etc. Willie had to find one he liked, right? Unfortunately, yes. Unfortunately because out of all of the treats, which one does Willie choose to like the best? The Pig Ears. Um, ew. Really Willie? A pig ear? I mean it’s a legit pig ear. I looked at the lady with a look of horror on my face as Willie’s face lit up like a Christmas tree as he buried his head into the pile of ears, snatched up his favorite one and  danced back down the store aisle with his new swine friend in mouth. Ick.

Well, regardless of how disgusting it is, it definitely works. And it’s actually a very healthy treat which makes mommy happy. Even better, these piggy ears are only 99 cents! Jeff literally told me to buy out the store when he found out how well they worked. So, this is a warning to all farmers, lock up your piggies, I’ve got a hungry puppy on my hands!

Jeff and I spent the past weekend painting our apartment. We I was so excited to finally be able to start making this place all homey! We’re slowly tackling each room bit by bit and it’s really starting to come together. My big project for the weekend: The Kitchen. We have a pretty plain, white kitchen with nothing too extraordinary about it. See below.

See what I mean? A pretty standard, NYC apartment kitchen. So, of course I was dying to do something fun with it. My wheels started turning in my head and they immediately landed on an idea to paint the far wall with black chalkboard paint. I’ve ALWAYS wanted to use chalkboard paint somewhere and by golly, I finally figured out a way to convince the hubsters to buy me some :) So, off we skipped hand in hand went to the paint store, picked up a 1/2 gallon of my paint, bought some chalk and then I set to work!

Voila!

But then there was the task of figuring out what the heck I was going to draw on this chalkboard wall. I had all these big ideas of what to draw and how I was going to theme it, but then I realized that I’m not exactly as talented as my sister and I ended up searching “chalk drawings” on Google Images for design inspiration. What resulted was a free hand interpretation of one of those stick on wall murals you see at Target. So, here ya have it! It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with it :)

Now that we’re all moved in, Jeff could make a fortune if he earned a dollar every time he heard me say, “I really want to make our apartment look really cute.” What? I’m a girl, of course I have visions of beautifully painted walls, cool furniture and absolute organization. Of course, in the real world, those things don’t always exist, but in my brain they do. And on the Young House Love blog they do! I can’t remember if I’ve already talked about this blog or not, but it recently has made a huge reappearance in my life as I’m trying to figure out cute, but very inexpensive, ways to spruce up our new home.

The blog is all about a couple who bought a house and essentially re-did EVERYTHING to make it their own. And they completed everything just in time for them to get married in their cute new backyard, how charming! The design inspiration is great, and it really gives you the confidence that you, too, can take on the challenge of redecorating your living space to meet your needs. Check out their blog, they have some great ideas and some wonderful eye candy, (some of my favorites below!)

Whew! We did it and there were no dish, furniture (or human!) casualties this time. Sweet. We finally have internet up and running again so I can reconnect with the world, so nice. It’s amazing how disconnected I felt without it. That’s probably not the most healthy state of mind when I have a panic attack about not being able to blog, check my mail every 8 minutes, or get on Facebook. Perhaps I should try an Eat, Pray, Love stunt like Julia Roberts, but who has time for that, psht!

We love our new apartment though! It’s much more spacious than our old apartment, and it’s cheaper, holla! Willie loves all the running around room he has…..well, I’m sure he’ll like it even more when he’s able to run around and not run into cardboard boxes. However, he does enjoy giving mommy heart attacks and hiding from her in the boxes and then popping out and attacking. Funny Wills, very funny. We’re going to be painting the walls in a few weeks when we have a free weekend with nothing planned, (sigh….that sounds so nice). And picking out paint colors is way more fun than I thought it would be! I could spend hours in the Home Depot aisles that contain Martha Stewart Paint. They’re beautiful. Jeff had to tear me away last night and refocus my attention on the issue at hand- ice trays. Sounds pretty lame, but we were in need of some ice! We don’t have an automatic ice maker in our freezer in the new place and we had been freezing ice cubes in our mini cupcake baking pan, odd. I got angry because I mean, come on, I need to use my mini cupcake baking pan like daily, (hello?!?), so we had to purchase some actual ice trays. And Home Depot delivered quite nicely on some, as well as a new shower head because Jeff towered 8 inches above our current one, bath rugs because Willie destroyed our last ones and paint supplies for whenever we find the time to paint.

And that’s a synopsis of my boring life right now. Hope you’re still awake :)

Did anyone catch last night’s episode of Jay Leno? Well, if you’re Team CoCo I guess you didn’t, but you should have! Two of my sorority sisters were featured on the show! Lauren and Evann are in LA for the summer taking part in the Elon in LA Experience, a summer program that Elon arranges for current students. It’s a great program and it’s becoming really popular! So anyway, Lauren and Evann were sitting in their apatment a few weeks ago, minding their own business when Jay Leno comes knocking on their door with his TV crew in tow. He told them they were filming a segment for the show called “Blockbusters on a Budget” and they wanted their help recreating the upcoming summer movie Eat, Pray, Love with Julia Roberts. Of course they agreed and the hilarity ensued! Definitely check it out if you have it TiVoed. IF not check it out below! (You’ll need to fast forward to the 16 minute mark)

Congrats Lauren and Evann, you’re famous :)

Jeff and I are preparing to move to a new apartment and are currently swimming in giant U-Haul boxes full of all of our crap stuff. They’re a constant reminder that we really need to get our butts in gear and get to packing so we’re not panicking to throw stuff in the truck on Friday morning. However, last night, we got attacked by our TV. Specifically by Bravo TV. And we got sucked in by those darn housewives of New Jersey. I’m sure we’ve done a blog post on them before, but good lord, they were on a rampage last night! I started watching it in the evening before Jeff came home. Jeff thought I was cooking dinner, but he came home to me laid out on the couch stuffing potato chips in my face and laughing my head off as one of the housewives got her hair extensions ripped out of her head….again.

These women! Good God. I just don’t understand how they became famous. It baffles me. What baffles me even more? Oh, just the fact that it wasn’t more than hour after Jeff was making fun of me for watching such crap on TV, that he was sucked into the trashy marathon of house mommies and wondering who was going to flip a table next.

One night completely wasted. The U-Haul boxes are now mocking me. Looks like Jeffers has a lot of packing to do over the next 3 days….I won’t be here and can’t help, woops :)
