I had a pretty amazing college career. I loved college. I went to one of the most beautiful universities in the country, and it was at this university that a certain tradition was born. A tradition deeply rooted in the Greek Life system that produced strong rivalries and cut throat competition that could leave the faint of heart crying in a corner. No, I’m not kidding. Everyone knows that when the month of April rolls around, Elon University sororities are frantically busy preparing for the annual Greek Week Dance Competition. What is that you may ask? Well, let me tell you! My life revolved around this competition all 4 years of my college career. I. LOVED. IT. My sorority, Sigma Kappa, would begin preparing for this competition in January….preparing choreography, designing costumes, building the set etc. It was a process, a very intricate process, and a process that the entire sorority helped with and supported totally.
That was my favorite part. Seeing the entire sorority come together for one goal. It sounds silly, but the camaraderie gained through all of our hard work was priceless. I had fantastic friends who were just as into this dance as I was, and played just as large of a role as I did in bringing the whole picture together. You see, this was such a big deal. Probably one of the biggest, if not the biggest, competitions between the sororities on campus. Each sorority’s dance had a theme that had to be kept top-secret until the performance. That never happened of course. Everyone knew each other’s themes well before dance day. We used to tell our girls that when asked our theme was always “Tupac: The Resurrection.” We always got a little giggle out of that one. Each sorority had super secret costumes, and super secret sets. I was always so proud of our sets; they were phenomenal. The other sororities hated us for our sets. They claimed that it was a “dance competition” not a “who has the best props competition” and it wasn’t fair that we won because it was only because of our props. Oh, the drama girls can create. However, they had a fair argument in my opinion. I saw exactly where they were coming from. But I made sure that their argument fell on deaf ears when we came back my senior year and won by what I would say was a pretty resounding margin. And no, I’m not being biased. Our win was validated several times that night by friendly people in the parking lot yelling “Your dance was F*ing awesome!” And lovely patrons at West End Bar exclaiming, “Sigma Kappa was the Sh*t!” And girls from other sororities leaving me nice Facebook messages congratulating our sorority on our deserved win.
I loved college
And I was always so proud of my sorority when we performed in Greek Week. I got the most pride out of taking 40+ girls, most of whom had never danced a day in their lives, and molding them together to look like they had been dancing their whole lives. And the best part….they had FUN doing it! Last night was no different either! I paid a visit up to Elon to see Sigma Kappa perform this year and they certainly didn’t let me down earning a sweet 2nd place! I’d say that in the past 5 years, Sigma Kappa winning 1st Place three times, and 2nd Place twice isn’t too shabby
Congrats girls! You made Sigma Kappa so proud! Here’s the video of their performance last night, just so you can get an idea of the insanity that I’m talking about. Their theme was “The End of the World.” Remember, this is a college sorority with a lot of girls with no dance training, limited practice space and only 2.5 months to prepare this. Pretty amazing what you can do when you work hard!
Oh, and just so I can ring my own bell, here’s our 1st place performance from my Senior year. Our theme was “Black Magic” just in case you couldn’t tell

This competition went to the birds when they started letting 96 teams in.
